  3. Culture Creates Luxury A consumer may only see the end result; warm luxury fabrics that can be shaped into any garment they might desire. But for the nomads, it all begins with the connection they have with their animals. Goats and Yaks are the companions of the nomads in this unforgiving environment. Every gust of wind and every harsh winter night in their world shape the long fine threads that make Mongolian cashmere and Yak wool some of the most desirable materials on the planet. The bone-chilling temperatures on the plateau can fall below -40 Celsius, and it is only in this environment that Hircus goats can grow the velvety undercoat that creates our cloud-like cashmere. Their coats are dense and packed with incredibly fine hairs that measure 19 microns or less individually, arguably creating the most luxurious feeling cashmere in the world.

The niche ecology frame (for cashmere goats) associates quality with environment. The impacts of climate change may be implicit.

For more than six generations, Italian company Loro Piana, the world’s most revered wool and cashmere brand, has been sourcing the finest fibers from some of the most inhospitable places on Earth to create its famously exquisite fabrics and garments. After decades of buying its raw cashmere fibers directly from selected herdsmen from Inner and Outer Mongolia, in 2009 it launched a sustainable development program, the Loro Piana Method, with universities in Italy, China and Mongolia. This initiative aims to further improve the impeccable quality that Loro Piana’s devoted customers expect of its cashmere, support smaller herds through selective breeding, preserve the ancient and complex craft of harvesting the precious under-fleece, secure a premium price for the herdsmen’s precious fibers, and protect the local ecosystem.

    (but not necessarily "improved" breeds?)

This is the only major description of sustainability here. Sustainability is connected to "safe and practical" production in Mongolia, which does not really say much.

  12. ustomers are becoming more environmentally aware and want to know whether the product they're buying - particularly a luxury item such as cashmere – has been ethically and sustainably produced. A credible certification standard demonstrates to consumers that their cashmere has been produced responsibly and in a way that benefits herders.

Note Batkhishig's repeated use of the word "credible". The standard needs to be international in order for it to be taken seriously, and this is what will allow Mongolian producers to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability.
