abstractNoteFrom yarn to textiles to clothing, cashmere wool obtained from goats in the Mongolia’s Gobi Desert ecosystem has grown in popularity. That has led to overgrazing in an area already threatened by climate change. That’s what has led Becky Chaplin-Kramer, lead scientist with the Natural Capital Project, to work in the area on the Sustainable Cashmere Project. She and her team use rangeland modeling and satellite remote sensing to monitor for improvements in rangeland quality, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and herder livelihoods. This NASA Applied Sciences’ Ecological Forecasting program project is a collaboration with NASA, the non-profit group the Wildlife Conservation Society, the operators of the copper mine Oyu Togi, and the luxury good group Kering, which runs the brands Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and many others.
