Note

Insofar as the author's expenses were paid by Rio Tinto, it is unsurprising that this article presents the project in a favourable light. The sources are all project staff or international experts. A more critical, investigative report would have perhaps explored/questioned the impacts of the project -- and the Oyu Tolgoi mine -- on the livelihoods of Mongolian herders themselves, whose voices are generally absent from this article. The people quoted are: Dr Helen Crowley, an eminent conservation and ecosystem services specialist who works for Kering; Onon Bayasgalan, WCS representative; Otjonjav and Nergui, the host couple; Robyn Ellison, manager, communities and communications, in Rio Tinto’s copper and diamonds portfolio; Arnaud Soirat, Rio Tinto's chief of copper and diamonds; Becky Chaplin-Kramer, Stanford Natural Capital Project; Marie-Claire Daveu, chief sustainability officer and head of international institutional affairs for Kering; Dashnyam Batsuuri, OT’s fauna officer.
