1 # Open Ethnography License 2 3 ## Preamble 4 5 The Open Ethnography License is designed to accommodate and encourage the 6 sharing of digital ethnographic works in research and educational contexts. 7 8 The License enables the dissemination and re-use of copyrighted ethnographic 9 works, on the condition that any licensed work and its derivatives must be 10 published in an open and editable format. 11 12 The License only permits the use of works for purposes of research and study. 13 By providing a narrowly-defined set of potential uses, the License limits 14 uncertainty for contributors to ethnographic research projects over how 15 documents that represent them -- and that potentially include significant 16 details of their private lives -- might be used in the future. The License is 17 not intended to preclude other uses of ethnographic works, but these uses need 18 to be negotiated separately with creators and contributors. 19 20 ## Definitions 21 22 "The Work" is a copyrightable digital record or collection that is licensed 23 under this license. 24 25 The "Source" of the Work includes all components of the Work and any custom 26 scripts or tools that are necessary for a user to edit the Work or to build a 27 distribution copy. 28 29 A "distribution copy" of the Work is a version of the Work intended for 30 dissemination to end users. It is not necessarily in an editable 31 format. 32 33 ## Permissions 34 35 Except where supplementary restrictions are indicated by the author of the 36 Work, you are free to make use of the Work in the following ways: 37 38 - Accessing the Work and its Source; 39 - Making and storing copies of the Work and its Source; 40 - Redistributing the Work and its Source by any means and in any format; 41 - Producing modified versions of the Work, or new works based on the 42 original Work. 43 44 ## Conditions 45 46 Your use of the Work is subject to the following conditions. 47 48 ### Attribution 49 50 In any verbatim copy, extract, reference, or derivative work involving use of 51 the Work, you must provide and maintain a clear and unambiguous reference 52 enabling users to locate: 53 54 1. The original, unmodified Work; 55 2. The copyright and acknowledgement notices pertaining to the unmodified 56 Work, identifying all authors and contributors as applicable; 57 3. These license terms; and 58 4. Any supplementary conditions specified by previous authors or contributors 59 concerning how the Source of the Work, or any of its components, may be 60 used. 61 62 ### Research and Study 63 64 You may access, copy, distribute, or create new works from this Work only for 65 purposes that involve or are intended to facilitate research or study, without 66 limitation as to field of endeavour. For clarity, the term "research or study" 67 includes but is not limited to: 68 69 - Research for the general advancement of knowledge, including activities 70 involved in the preparation of a scholarly article, report, book, or 71 thesis; 72 - Research related to an applied purpose, such as policy development; 73 - Activities conducted in the context of a taught course; or 74 - Studying a topic out of private interest. 75 76 ### Open Access 77 78 If you alter, transform, or build upon this Work in any way, 79 you must make a copy of the Source of the resulting work freely accessible to 80 the public on terms compatible with this license. 81 82 You may charge a reasonable fee to cover the cost of reproduction and 83 distribution of the Source, but may not prevent others from redistributing the 84 Source for free or otherwise.
